Miser Mind
Rules of the Game
The rules are like that of MasterMind(R). If you've never played,
the idea is to determine the pattern of colored pegs that the
computer has selected. To accomplish this, you make guesses and use
the hints provided for each guess to logically deduce the answer to
the puzzle. When evaluating your guess the computer gives you a black
peg for every color peg you have in the correct position, and a white
peg for every color peg that is in the puzzle, but not in the position
you have placed it in. The positions of the score pegs do NOT
correspond to the positions of the color pegs.
Using MiserMind
The basic idea is to grab pegs from the big color piles in the bin at
the bottom of the board and drag them to the position you'd like. You
can move pegs around by clicking on them and dragging them to a new
position (if you hold the Shft or Ctrl key down when clicking on a peg,
it will make a copy of it). Double-clicking on a peg makes it go away
(you can also just drag a peg off the playing area to get rid of it).
Double-clicking on a peg in the row below the working row will cause
that peg to be duplicated in the working row (useful if you are real
sure of a peg). Double-clicking on a color pile will put a peg of that
color in the first blank position in the working row (quick way to fill
up those initial guesses).
Note that you can work with pegs on the whole board, not just the
working row. However, pegs in rows that have been evaluated cannot
be moved or changed.
Once you have set up a guess, clicking on the small button between the
color pegs and the score pegs will cause the computer to evaluate your
guess (you can also select Evaluate Guess from the menu, or press
Ctrl-E, if you like that better). You have 12 shots at guessing the
puzzle.
If you are so inclined, you can get a hint about the puzzle by
clicking the right button on one of the puzzle pieces (the circles
with the ? in 'em). If you are really annoyed, or just in a rush,
you can give up by double-clicking (the left button) on the puzzle
(again, you can select Give Up from the menu).
Finally, to get started again, you can select New Game from the menu
(or hit Ctrl-N).
